Marques Colston Fantasy News

The return of David Thomas allowed the Saints to use a variety of hybrid packages, shifting the versatile veteran between tight end and F-back throughout the game. Thomas' return meant backup fullback Korey Hall was inactive. The distribution of snaps at receiver and running back was about as democratic as its ever been. In fact, I can't remember the last time Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem had more snaps than Marques Colston. That's attributable largely to the reliance on the running game, where Henderson and Meachem are considered the best blockers in the group.
Here's the breakdown of the reps at each skill position: WR - Henderson 39; Meachem 38; Colston 37; Moore 25.TE - Graham 40; Gilmore 25; David Thomas 18. RB - Sproles 28; P.Thomas 21; Ivory 21. FB - Collins 23.
Notice that Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory played the same number of snaps.
Fantasy owners should be aware that Ivory is eating into Thomas's playing time, so Thomas is not a no-brainer start with Mark Ingram sidelined.

Saints WR Marques Colston is no longer a limited snap count. He played 48 snaps, one week after getting just 20 against Jacksonville.
Here's the breakdown of the reps at each skill position: WR - Colston 48; Meachem 45; Moore 36; Henderson 33.
Colston is fully back, which means he's once again a reasonably solid WR2/WR3.
Marques Colston's role to "increase." He's "fully healthy."

Saints HC Sean Payton on Marques Colston: "His role was limited last week but you will see his role increase. He is fully healthy."
When healthy, Colston has been the most dependable WR in New Orleans. But with the emergency of Jimmy Graham, along with the healthy presence of Lance Moore, Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson, Colston is no longer a great fantasy wideout. However, he's startable this week against a shaky Panthers secondary.

Regarding the two New Orleans Saints players that are questionable for this week - linebacker Jonathan Vilma (knee) and wide receiver Marques Colston (shoulder) - New Orleans head coach Sean Payton made it clear he felt, based on their limited participation at practice, that both would be able to play.
Despite Payton's optimism, Colston is a risky fantasy option because we don't know how much he'll play. If you have a lot of depth, don't feel compelled to start him. Vilma's return would make the Saints an even stronger defensive play.

Sean Payton neither elaborated nor was asked about Marques Colston's upcoming status for Sunday's game during his news conference at Metairie. Later, in a conference call with the Jacksonville media, Payton offered a cryptic remark that seemed to indicate Colston would play and that was published as a clear statement that Colston would play.
"Yeah, he was listed as limited, but he's cleared," a transcript of Payton's words released by the Jaguars organization reads. "He'll be up this week."
In normal NFL parlance, "up this week" means a player presumably will be on the 46-man active roster. Players are not in that status unless they are expected to play and contribute.
Still, it is highly unusual for Payton to make a definitive pronouncement about the game status of a player popping up on the injury report, especially this early in the week. Like many in the profession, Payton is reluctant to reveal specific information about injuries.
We'll monitor Colston's practice activity this week. The Jaguars have been surprisingly tough against the pass, so he's at best a WR3/flex play. We'd like to see him on the field for his usual workload before trusting him with a start.

Saints WR Lance Moore, whose groin was injured during the team's California training camp, appeared to be running fluidly, and his routes looked crisp, but even he acknowledged questions remain.
In particular, Moore said he is anxious to see how he will feel today on the heels of some strenuous work. Moore practiced three days before the Packers game last week, but then was unable to play on Sept. 8.
"I feel pretty good," Moore said. "It's just a matter of getting back in there, getting reps and seeing how my body reacts. My mentality is I want to be out there, but Coach Payton has done a pretty good job of communicating with me that we don't want this one-week injury turning into a four-, five- or even six-week injury. So we're going to kind of see how my body reacts to being back out there at practice."
Having missed six weeks with a high-ankle sprain in 2009, Moore said this hasn't been the most frustrating stretch of his career.
"So this is something that I'm definitely positive about," he said. "I'm just going to work as hard as I can to hopefully be out there on Sunday."
With Marques Colston sidelined, there is a lot of opportunity in the Saints WR corps right now. If Moore is a "full go" then he'll be a solid start in most formats. His presence would put a dent in the value of Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson. We're still reasonably high on Meachem, even if Moore returns.

Sean Payton said on his radio show tonight the Saints haven't talked to any free agent WRs and are happy with their current group of wideouts.
With Marques Colston out and Lance Moore banged up, Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson could become the starters. We'll keep you posted on whether or not Lance Moore is back this week after missing last week.
