David Carr Fantasy News
Wednesday, January 18, 2012, 9:47pm
As the Giants began their week of preparation for the NFC Championship Game, quarterback Eli Manning left today's practice early with what coach Tom Coughlin called "a stomach bug."
"Hopefully it is just a 24-hour deal," Coughlin said, "and he’ll feel better tomorrow."
Manning was in meetings all morning, and he participated in the jog-thru period of practice and took a few reps, but was sent inside when he felt ill. Back-up David Carr took over and said he took about 75 percent of today's reps.

Quarterback Alex Smith took part in 7-on-7 drills, but did not take any snaps during team work because of his left shoulder separation. His availability for Sunday's game appears to be a longshot. Troy Smith handled all of the team's practice snaps, and is certain to receive his second consecutive start. David Carr running the scout team during practice Thursday. Practice-squad quarterback Nate Davis was excused for personal reasons . . . Troy Smith, obviously, will start at quarterback for the 49ers on Sunday. And the team has to tailor its game plan specifically for Troy Smith.
Troy Smith Starting QB in San Fran

Troy Smith, who has yet to take a first-team practice snap with the 49ers, will be the team's starting quarterback Sunday against the Denver Broncos, coach Mike Singletary announced Wednesday morning.
Alex Smith is expected to miss 2 to 3 weeks with a left shoulder separation, Singletary said. David Carr has been demoted after struggling against the Carolina Panthers after taking over for Alex Smith. Carr completed 5 of 13 passes for 67 yards and a critical interception in the 49ers' 23-20 loss to the Panthers.

QB Alex Smith has been diagnosed with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, but the 49ers haven't revealed any more details. Smith is currently in a sling.
It seems that David Carr will remain the starter.
49ers not sure of QB Smith's status

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith spent Monday morning at a hospital in London having his injured left shoulder examined and is still waiting to hear if he will be able to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium.
The 49ers (1-6) flew to London from Charlotte, where they blew a late lead and lost to the Carolina Panthers 23-20. Smith was injured on a third-quarter sack and still had his non-throwing arm in a sling Monday afternoon.
"It's all right. Could be better," Smith said after arriving at the team's hotel outside London from the hospital.
David Carr would get the start against a Broncos defense that should play better this week...

Jason Campbell starts for the Raiders with Bruce Gradkowski nursing a sore right shoulder. 49ers WR Michael Crabtree, who had nine catches for 105 yards last Sunday night against the Eagles, has made a big deal this week about Al Davis passing him over in the 2009 draft, taking Darrius Heyward-Bey instead. 49ers QB Alex Smith is on a short leash with coach Mike Singletary, but few believe that David Carr would perform much better. San Francisco must be concerned with Oakland’s running game, which is averaging 148 yards a game.

The San Francisco 49ers waived third-string quarterback Nate Davis on Monday, just more than a year after drafting him in the fifth round out of Ball State. Shortly after announcing they had parted ways with Davis, the team said it signed quarterback Troy Smith to a one-year deal.
Coach Mike Singletary had been openly frustrated with Davis’ slow development and work ethic despite the quarterback’s dyslexia that makes it difficult to grasp the playbook. Singletary hinted after Thursday night’s preseason victory over San Diego that Davis was a question mark to make the team, but he was still around Friday when the Niners trimmed their roster to the 53-player limit.
The move was made Monday as San Francisco prepares for its opener at NFC West rival Seattle, but announced hours after Singletary addressed the media.
The 49ers already have starter Alex Smith and backup David Carr, two former No. 1 overall picks. Singletary had said they could get by with only two quarterbacks, but opted to add Troy Smith. He was a fifth-round draft pick by Baltimore in 2007 and has appeared in 14 games with two starts in three seasons. The Ravens cut Smith on Saturday.

San Francisco’s first defense allowed three touchdowns and the team committed 10 penalties but the Niners still managed to squeak out their third straight preseason win.
They beat the Oakland Raiders 28-24 as backup quarterback David Carr led a late touchdown drive that gave the Niners the victory.
The Niners put together a 16-play, 80-yard drive to win it. Rookie running back Anthony Dixon scored on third-and-goal from the 1 to give San Francisco the lead with 1:44 remaining.
Frank Gore ran for 58 yards on two carries in his first action of the preseason for the Niners, Alex Smith threw a touchdown pass to Josh Morgan and rookie Phillip Adams scored on an 83-yard punt return as San Francisco remained undefeated in the preseason.
Linebacker Patrick Willis had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage against Darren McFadden and an 11-yard sack against Jason Campbell.
Niners LT Joe Staley (sprained knee) and running back Brian Westbrook (hamstring) are day to day. Niners WR Michael Crabtree did not play because of a stiff neck.

Standouts so far this week have been quarterback David Carr, who is looking more and more competent as he digests the offense, and receiver Jason Hill, who is benefiting from the extra snaps Brandon Jones' ankle injury affords the other receivers. Those two hooked up on a nice 25-yard pass play on Carr's first attempt during 11-on-11 drills. Hill also caught a short pass from Carr and a 15-yarder from Alex Smith.
