Running back Cedric Benson didn’t fumble the ball on his first 237 touches of the season and in the past two games he’s put it on the ground five times on his last 36 touches. Two with nearly unthinkable consequences last Saturday in the fourth quarter as the Bengals nearly blew a 23-point lead in the final 11:25 of the 23-16 victory over Arizona at Paul Brown Stadium.
But the Bengals are hanging with Benson, author of two of the nine 100-yard games the Ravens have allowed in the last 82 games.
“We’re married to him right now," offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said after Wednesday’s practice. “He’s a guy that has had great games against Baltimore in the past. We need him to run between the tackles and be his physical self and not worry so much about it. He’s had a ton of carries before the last couple of weeks where he hasn’t fumbled. He’s got to get back in that mentality, get his confidence going and protect the football better. Obviously putting the ball on the ground is unacceptable no matter your position.”

Cedric Benson will serve suspension Week 8
Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 12:41pm
Before the Bengals left for their bye week, running back Cedric Benson found out that he would be suspended for one game.
In announcing the suspension, the NFL said that Benson’s suspension begins immediately. In addition to missing the Oct. 30 game at Seattle, the fine for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy will also include one additional game check.
In a copy of the ruling obtained by The Enquirer informing Benson and his representatives of his suspension, league hearing officer Harold Henderson said the original three-game penalty was more than warranted. However a one-game suspension was appropriate since Benson agreed to a fine and jail time from a 2010 incident outside a bar in Austin, Texas.
On Aug. 28, Benson pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 20 days in jail. He also entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with prosecutors regarding a July 17 assault charge involving a former roommate.
While that incident happened during the lockout, Henderson wrote that under federal labor law, Benson was still subject to discipline.
“We’ve been planning for this for the previous six weeks. so we’ll go forward the week prior to Seattle and we’ll be without Ced when we go out to play Seattle,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said.
This reduced suspension is obviously good news for Benson owners who have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The Seahawks have given up the 5th-fewest adjusted fantasy points to RBs this season, so Bernard Scott won't be a good start even without Benson in the lineup.
Cedric Benson suspension reduced to one game

While everyone is focused on the Carson Palmer trade, there comes word that the league will suspend RB Cedric Benson for one game based off the arrests over the last two years in Austin, Texas. In what was originally going to be a three-game suspension, Benson met in New York with the league for a hearing on Sept. 27.
Benson’s suspension would likely be for the Oct. 30 game at Seattle even though Benson’s attorney, William David Cornwell, did say that he would be reviewing the decision over the next day or two.
It sounds like Bernard Scott will only be the starter for one game, and it likely comes in a bad matchup against the Seahawks due to the appeals process dragging on. The Seahawks are allowing the 5th least schedule-adjusted fantasy points to running backs, making Scott a fringe start in week 8.

Word coming out of Cincinnati is that Bengals halfback Cedric Benson, facing a three-game suspension, may be able to have two or three more weeks on the field while he appeals.
The concern about Benson is he could miss AFC North games against Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cleveland from Nov. 13 through Nov. 27 if he loses his appeal.
