John Beck took over as starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins three weeks ago, but given his performance the last couple of games, is he on a shorter leash this week?
Possibly.
This week, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had Beck split first-team snaps with second-string quarterback Rex Grossman, who opened the season as the starter but was benched four games ago.
Grossman struggles to take care of the football, but he has a better feel for the system, and he has a strong rapport with tight end Fred Davis and receiver Jabar Gaffney, the team’s leading pass-catchers.
Shanahan began giving Grossman more first-team snaps in practice last season before making the decision to bench Donovan McNabb for the final three games of the season.
The move to give Grossman first team snaps also could be intended to put more pressure on Beck. Mike Shanahan likes to create competition in practice to spark improvement.
Generally speaking, Grossman has looked better than Beck, but neither one is a long-term answer for the Redskins or your fantasy team. The best thing to do would be to stay away from both of them.

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he was pleased with the play of rookie Roy Helu in Helu’s first professional start, but the coach declined to say whether the Nebraska product would start next week against Miami.
Helu had a franchise record 14 catches – most of them on dump-off passes from John Beck -- for 105 yards and carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards in Washington’s 19-11 loss to San Francisco.
Meanwhile, third-year veteran Ryan Torain, who had started the previous week, had one carry for two yards and a catch for seven yards.
Shanahan on Monday declared rookie wide receiver Leonard Hankerson a starter for a second straight week, but when asked whether Helu would start, the coach instead talked about how more than one running back must be ready to play.

John Beck will remain the Redskins' starting quarterback, head coach Mike Shanahan said. Beck will make his fourth Redskins start and eighth NFL start next Sunday vs. Miami, his former team.
“Yeah, we’re going to stick with John," Shanahan said after the Redskins lost to the San Francisco 49ers 19-11 on Sunday at FedExField.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan came away from his film study of Washington’s 33-20 loss to the Carolina with a sense of pride in how quarterback John Beck played in his first start for the team.
Beck – who hadn’t started a game since 2007, when he was a rookie with Miami – completed 22 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown and an interception on 37 attempts, rushed for a touchdown and had one fumble during a blindside sack.
Beck spread the ball around to eight different receivers and for much of the game was without two of the team’s top targets (tight end Chris Cooley, who missed the game with a broken finger, and receiver Santana Moss, who broke his hand in the game). Shanahan was pleased with how Beck handled the adversity he faced.
Skins WR Moss has surgery, expected out a month
Monday, October 24, 2011, 6:25pm
Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss tweeted that he is having surgery on his broken left hand this afternoon, a day after he injured it in the first half of Washington’s 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
It’s expected that Moss will miss at least a month of playing time.
Moss, who entered Sunday’s game leading all Redskins wide receivers with 22 catches for 284 yards and two touchdowns, suffered the injury while trying to break his fall on a play. He recorded two catches for 17 yards before he was injured.
Anthony Armstrong and Niles Paul should benefit and get more time at WR, however John Beck is far from a strong fantasy QB at this point so don't get too excited about these waiver guys. Jabar Gaffney looks to be Washington's WR1.

Anyone looking for the obvious difference between John Beck and Grossman saw it right away: Beck was nimble on his feet and eventually scored on a 2-yard quarterback draw, the type of play that no one would expect from Grossman.
The Redskins plan to take advantage of that mobility when they can.
"I'm not giving away a secret that Beck is faster than Rex," offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. "But he's not faster than all those guys on the defense. You can do a little bit more with his legs, but you can't totally depend on it."

TE Chris Cooley says he'll be out at least 3 weeks but expects to return this season. He had a plate inserted in his finger.
Fred Davis should be TE1 caliber while Cooley is sidelined, assuming new QB John Beck looks his way as often as Rex Grossman did.
Redskins will start John Beck in Week 7

Schefter on the Redskins' QB situation: "Washington's John Beck will start at quarterback Sunday versus Carolina."
It looks like Rex Grossman's four-interception game was the last straw. Beck reportedly was close to winning the job in the preseason, so it's no surprise that the Redskins are handing him the keys now. Grossman was more of a known quantity, but fantasy-wise he didn't play well even in good matchups this season. It's time so see what Beck can do. The Panthers have been mediocre against the pass, but Beck is not a good fantasy option in his first start.

A day after Mike Shanahan pulled quarterback Rex Grossman in favor of John Beck, the Washington Redskins coach wouldn’t say who is the team’s starting quarterback.
“I have not made up my mind right now,” Shanahan said during Monday afternoon’s press conference. “I believe in both guys. … I know these guys have got what it takes.”

Yes, some of you have already started calling for John Beck, but in reality, there isn’t likely to be a switch any time soon.
If Beck was legitimately better, Mike Shanahan would have gone with him out of the gate. He and Kyle Shanahan know what Grossman is. He has been this way his whole career. And still, they didn’t roll the dice and go with Beck.
If Grossman continues at this rate - touchdown here, interception there - and Washington remains competitive, the hook isn’t likely to come.

Redskins HC Mike Shanahan is letting the QB competition go down to the wire, but at least his charges have proved worthy of the competition. Both John Beck and Rex Grossman have played well. Any slip-up in the preseason finale Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be decisive.
“It's very close,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. “They both have done a good job and had good numbers. When we review the tape, it's pretty neck-and-neck.”
