Raiders beat writer expects 1,000-yard season from DHB
Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 4:17pm

Steve Corkran, Twitter - [Full Article]

When asked if Darrius Heyward-Bey would have his first 1,000-yard season in 2012, Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran said, "Yes, I fully expect that to occur."

Fantasy Impact:

Considering Heyward-Bey gained 975 yards in 15 games in 2011, it's not much of a stretch to predict a 1,000-yard season, but it's important that DHB's role as the teams WR1 or WR2 is established early on. His snaps were erratic in 2011 but he was productive in his targets averaging 1.08 Fantasy Points / Target, which ranked #53 out of the 119 WRs who saw at least 30 targets in 2011. That's not too bad considering all the changes the Raiders saw at QB. With a full offseason to work with Carson Palmer, DHB's production should increase.

The strength and conditioning phase of the Raiders offseason is four days old and Carson Palmer can’t work with position coaches or coordinators on the field, but he’s in the formative stages of learning the playbook and has spent time in meetings as the offense has been installed. To say Palmer is excited would be an understatement.

Some of his observations during an interview late Thursday afternoon:

– “I think it’s really going to fit the personnel we have. The style of play with the offensive line and the zone running scheme, and the speed we have in the backfield, it’s built for making a read, making one cut, and getting vertical and putting pressure on the defense with our speed and our running backs just heading north when they find the hole in that zone.”

– “I spent time talking with Darren McFadden and Taiwan Jones about it, and obviously the running game is going to be big for the Oakland Raiders this year. And what comes off the running game is really cool. All the play-action stuff really utilizes what we have on the outside. There’s not a lot of routes where guys are stopping. They’re using their speed, they’re on the move. It’s going to fit the strong suits of a lot of guys we have on offense, including myself.”

Carson Palmer: Denarius Moore "will be a star"
Saturday, March 31, 2012, 9:18pm

The San Francisco Chronicle - [Full Article]

Carson Palmer has made no secret of how good he thinks Denarius Moore can be, and Friday said that Moore “will be a star” with his “big-play making ability.” He has talked to Moore often this offseason and said he loves that Moore is disappointed he didn’t do more last season, when he got hurt. “He’s working hard this offseason and he wants to be the best, and I am going to push him.”

Per Greg Cosell: Raiders Carson Palmer’s first start in Oakland didn’t get a lot of hype. He struggled to move the ball at the end of the game.

After watching the film, however, Cosell saw plenty of things to like.

“I know everybody is focused on the interceptions, but I thought the Palmer threw the ball extremely well. I thought he read coverage well,” Cosell said. “He made about three or four ‘Wow’ throws. He looked comfortable in the pocket. . . . He had good velocity.”

So much for Palmer’s arm strength being an issue after the layoff from football.

Hue Jackson on Heyward-Bey: That was just certain sets
Monday, November 7, 2011, 3:53pm

San Francisco Gate Chronicle - [Full Article]

Surprisingly, the player most affected by Houshmandzadeh's arrival was Darrius Heyward-Bey, who leads the team with 27 catches for 434 yards.

A game after he was targeted 11 times against Kansas City, Heyward-Bey was thrown to only once Sunday - and was hardly on the field as the Raiders used a lot of three-receiver sets with mixes of Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, Chaz Schilens and Houshmandzadeh.

Head coach Hue Jackson's explanation sounded a little fishy.

"That was just certain sets," Jackson said. "We have some very talented players, and he's one of them, and we had certain sets where we have a bunch of guys (we're) targeting for those particular sets because of comfortability."

Fantasy Impact:

This certainly came out of nowhere, as Heyward-Bey led the Raiders in targets the last four weeks. It seems there is likely more to the story, but Carson Palmer seems to be dictating that T.J. Houshmandzadeh gets on the field, and the Raiders seem intent on getting Denarius Moore and a now-healthy Jacoby Ford plenty of snaps. We'll keep an eye on the situation next week, but DHB will be an extremely risky start after this goose egg.

QB Carson Palmer, who worked with Raiders receivers last week during two bye-week practices and two days afterward, said the difference in terms of command is dramatic.

"There's no comparison, this week to last Wednesday," Palmer said. "I'm comfortable with the entire playbook, comfortable with the guys, comfortable with the snap count, where to stand in the huddle. Every little bit I've been around here, every second I've had, I just learn more and more."

Free-agent WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh signed with the Raiders, the team announced. Houshmandzadeh, who worked out for the Raiders on Tuesday, has 616 catches for 7,091 yards and 43 TDs in his career. He teamed with new Raiders starting QB Carson Palmer in Cincinnati from 2003-08.

The Sporting News - [Full Article]

The Oakland Raiders’ bye week is a working week for quarterback Carson Palmer.

In the aftermath of his three-interception debacle in Sunday’s 28-0 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Palmer is using this bye week to build chemistry with the Raiders’ receivers. After Wednesday’s practice, the Raiders must take a four-day NFL-mandated break from organized workouts. However, Palmer and several receivers plan to remain in town to work out on their own. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford, Louis Murphy and Derek Hagan all told the Contra Costa Times that they would not leave town during the bye.

Fantasy Impact:

Palmer and his receivers need the extra work. This is another reason to be optimistic about Heyward-Bey's season-long prospects. He has come into his own this season with four-straight 82+ yard games. Better yet, he has performed no matter who has been throwing the ball.

Despite playing against the Chiefs, QB Carson Palmer said he memorized only three or four line protections and a small portion of the playbook. He also lacked the desired timing with his receivers.

Now he gets two weeks to brush up on the offense and get in synch with his receivers before the Raiders play again. By then, he said he expects to be much more effective.

Quarterback Kyle Boller reportedly will get the start for the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Newcomer Carson Palmer reportedly won’t.

Lost in the shuffle is rookie Terrelle Pryor, the quarterback for whom the Raiders gave up a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, via the 2011 supplemental draft. Pryor could make his debut against the Chiefs, as the Raiders have installed specific packages for him.

Pryor emerged less than two weeks ago from a five-game suspension. He was added to the active roster on Monday.

Speculation that new Oakland quarterback Carson Palmer’s velocity and arm strength has been an issue was refuted by Oakland head coach Hue Jackson.

"You’ve got to be kidding me," Jackson said. "I get surprised at those kinds of questions because I would never put the guy on the team or (trade) draft picks like that if he couldn’t throw the ball or he could not do or be what I think he has the potential to be."

Fantasy Impact:

Even if Palmer isn't the player he used to be, he's still better than Kyle Boller. However, if Palmer is going to make any kind of fantasy impact, it won't be until week nine at the earliest.
