Merriman may rest groin through bye week

Chargers LB Shawne Merriman was not surprised his injured groin wouldn't last more than a few snaps of yesterday's 23-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

“I wasn't good before the game,” Merriman said. “It wasn't feeling good at all. It wasn't there yet.  . . . I just had to go to see what I could do.”

Merriman played the first two snaps of Miami's first two series and then not again.

No one would say so, but it is likely the Chargers simply didn't want to let the Dolphins know Merriman wasn't going to be in the game. He is a key player teams have to account for when preparing their game plan.

Going forward, Merriman didn't rule out resting through the bye that follows this week's game at Pittsburgh.

“I don't know yet,” he said. “We'll do our best to get me ready (for Sunday).”

Rookie Larry English played in Merriman's place and continued to progress.

“I felt like I did OK,” said English, who knocked down a third-down pass in the fourth quarter. “I could have made more plays than I did.”
