What seemed like an ankle injury to 49er RB Kendall Hunter in the third quarter Sunday turned out to be an Achilles tear, according to a source with knowledge of the injury.
Although the 49ers have yet to make a roster move, that type of injury is certain to end Hunter's season. He had been the 49ers' second-leading runner behind Frank Gore, and perhaps more to the point, offered a nice change of pace to Gore's straight-ahead style.
Frank Gore owners don't have a locked-in handcuff right now. LaMichael James hasn't dressed for a game and Brandon Jacobs returned last week and had just one carry. Those two would likely split the workload if Gore were to miss time and Anthony Dixon could also be in the mix.
