Jimmy Raye, the 49ers' offensive coordinator, will remain in the press box and call the plays. However, Alex Smith will wear a wrist band that will have 180 plays on it and the team practiced with a 40-second clock this week in order to get the plays in faster to Smith, which was a problem in the Seattle opener. Smith was heartened that Patrick Willis, the 49ers’ best player, came to his defense despite coach Mike Singletary’s criticism of him after the Seattle defeat.
