Giant receivers getting closer

Hakeem Nicks walked from his locker to the shower yesterday with his lower leg covered in plastic, like a sandwich in a Ziploc bag. Nicks endured jokes about how it looked, although he might not need to wear the protection much longer.

Nicks missed his second game while recovering from compartment syndrome that required a fasciotomy. He has not practiced since the injury, although Nicks was in uniform on the sideline for the first time yesterday.

He expects the stitches to be removed this weekend, and he’ll start running on Monday. If he can run without issue, Nicks wants to join the Giants for practice on Wednesday.

Asked if he can play next week against the Vikings — one week ahead of schedule — Nicks smiled and said, “we’ll see.”

• Steve Smith is similarly unsure about his status for next week, but the Vikings game has been his stated goal. Smith has already missed three games. He said he was told his partially torn pectoral takes six weeks to heal, which explains the ambiguous timetable.
