Bucs release Dexter Jackson

St. Petersburg Times - [Full Article]

By releasing WR Dexter Jackson, the Bucs reached the league-mandated 75-man roster limit before Tuesday's deadline.

The Bucs reached for Jackson because Jon Gruden wanted a speedy kick return speciliast. Unfortunately, it's not a role that Jackson had even excelled at during his career at Appalachian State.

Jackson played in just seven regular season games and averaged 23.4 yards per kickoff and only 4.9 yards per punt return.

Jackson was replaced in that role by Clifton Smith, an undrafted free agent from Fresno State who parlayed the opportunity into a trip to the Pro Bowl after returning a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. He averaged 27.6 yards per kickoff and 14.1 yards per punt return.

Jackson had not played since suffering an ankle injury in the preseason opener at Tennessee.
