Beat: 'It will be hard' to take Marshawn Lynch 'off the field'

Seahawks beat writer Bob Condotta on the possibility of the team moving to more of a RBBC with Christine Michael taking some carries from Marshawn Lynch:

"My hunch is that if Lynch is healthy and still as productive as he’s been the past three years that it will be hard to take him off the field a ton. The Seahawks lead with their running game as much as any team in the NFL, and Lynch has been the key to that approach the last three seasons as the Seahawks have risen from obscurity to Super Bowl champs.

"The Seahawks have a unique opportunity to put themselves into rarefied NFL air by repeating as Super Bowl champs this season. While they need to prepare for a possible Lynch-less future that could begin as early as 2015, given his $9 million cap hit for that season, the Seahawks won’t do that at the expense of accomplishing the ultimate goal. And that’ll be the balancing act that figures to determine exactly how much of a by-committee approach the Seahawks ultimately put in place."

We currently project Lynch to get 287 touches (254 carries and 32 catches), which represents a 15% drop from last season and he's still #7 in our standard RB rankings.

Chargers to sign RB J.K. Dobbins on one-year deal

Former Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins is planning to sign with the #Chargers on a one-year deal. Electric when healthy, Dobbins — who averages 5.8 yards per carry in his career — reunites with OC Greg Roman and can hit the market again in March.

Fantasy Impact:

Dobbins has had poor injury luck in his career, but has only managed 234 total rushes since being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. This is a low-risk, high-reward move by the Chargers and might give them a runway to wait a little longer in the '24 Draft before they address the position.

Cowboys sign RB Royce Freeman

The Cowboys have signed running back Royce Freeman to a one-year deal. Freeman had 319 yards on 77 carries with 2 touchdowns last year for the Los Angeles Rams. He was 3rd round pick of Denver in '18.

Fantasy Impact:

Freeman hasn't rushed for 500 yards since 2018, his rookie season. This shouldn't have any impact on the team drafting at the position and/or bringing back Ezekiel Elliott.

The Eagles have paid another big-time, rising player. This time, WR DeVonta Smith gets a 3-year, $75M contract extension that includes $51M guaranteed.

Great news for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense as a whole. Smith will continue his 1b role in which he finished the 2023 season as fantasy's WR22.
