Quarterback By Waiver Wire (QBBWW): Week 6

Brian Hoyer, in my head, had a fantastic Week 5. He torched Buffalo’s flammable secondary in the depths of my imagination.

Hoyer, outside the confines of my degenerate mind, shredded his ACL on the second drive of Thursday night’s game on what might be the worst attempted slide in the history of organized pigskin.

Brandon Weeden, in all his mediocrity, went on to score 11.9 fantasy points against that leaky Bills’ secondary. Oh, what could have been, dear Quarterback By Waiver Wire adherent. Hoyer was going to make a meal of that secondary.

Our other two QBBWW Week 5 candidates, Philip Rivers and Terrelle Pryor, posted top-12 numbers in the late, late Sunday night game. Rivers continues to pile up the pass attempts – now averaging 40 a game – and the yards (322 yards per game). There’s no reason to think that’ll change; the Chargers are devoid of a run game.

Pryor continues to impress, not as a scrambling, rumbling, bumbling running signal caller, but as a real-life pocket passer. He completed his first seven passes against San Diego, throwing a few laser shots along the way. Pryor is completing 72 percent of his passes in his four games as starter.

I’m not sure what Pryor has to do to show he’s a superior weekly play to guys like Colin Kaepernick and Tom Brady. His fantasy ceiling might not be higher than Brady’s, but his fantasy floor is clearly above Kaepernick or Brady.

And Pryor is somehow still available in 62 percent of leagues.

My QBBBW plays, after five weeks of action, have averaged 16.2 fantasy points per game. Optimal plays from this QBBWW series would have netted you 20.8 points per week.
