Waiver Wire Watch: Week 7
Here is a look at the top waiver wire pickups for Week 7. To be eligible for discussion, the player must be owned in 50% or fewer ESPN leagues, though I'll stretch the rules a bit for the RB position, which is usually very thin. I'll also include suggested bid prices (with a $100 budget) for those leagues that use Free Agent Acquisition Budgets. Of course, player value depends on league characteristics and team needs.
* Players with an asterisk next to their name were mentioned in last week's Waiver Wire Watch.
Browns QB Brandon Weeden* ($3)
Looking for a bye week fill-in? Weeden is a good place to start. This week he faces the Colts, who are #29 in QB aFPA and just gave up two touchdown passes to Mark Sanchez in Week 6. Meanwhile, Weeden has averaged 280 yards and 1.4 touchdowns over his last five games. He has found a deep threat in Josh Gordon, who has caught three touchdowns in the last two weeks. Weeden should be serviceable against the Chargers in Week 8 as well. Owners who have Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick, Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton or Matt Schaub may want to pick up Weeden for the bye week.
Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick* ($3)
Fitzpatrick has been fairly brutal the last two weeks (279 total yards, INT), but things are looking up in Week 7 due to a very favorable matchup against a struggling Titans secondary. It's fair to expect 200+ yards and a pair of touchdowns. Owners who have Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick or Philip Rivers could use Fitzy as their bye week fill in.
Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill ($3)
Tannehill threw two touchdowns against the Rams, and after his Week 7 bye, he has the Jets, Colts, Titans and Bills, so he should post decent fantasy numbers in the short term.
Vikings QB Christian Ponder* ($3)
Ponder had a predictably good game against the Redskins in Week 6, throwing for 352 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions, marking the fourth time in five games that he has thrown two touchdowns. His matchup this week (ARI) isn't great, but he is one of the better fantasy QBs still available on the waiver wire. With a Week 8 matchup against the Buccaneers, he'd be a good fill in for owners who have Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton or Matt Schaub.
Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck* ($2)
Hasselbeck has been kind of spotty since taking over for Jake Locker. He has thrown for 228 yards, 1.3 TDs and 1.3 INTs in his last three games against the Texans, Vikings and the Steelers. Things should get much easier in the next two weeks against the Bills and the Colts, so Hasselbeck would be a serviceable fill in for those QBs that have a Week 7 or Week 8 bye.
Rams QB Sam Bradford ($1)
Bradford has had an up-and-down season posting decent-to-good fantasy lines depending on the opponent. In the next two weeks he figures to be throwing quite a bit against the Packers and the Patriots.
Cowboys RB Felix Jones ($55)
DeMarco Murray has ligament damage in his foot and may be out a while. Jones carried the ball 18 times for 92 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens, and will have a great matchup with the Panthers in Week 7. Depending on the matchup, Jones is a middle of the road RB2 as long as Murray is out.
