So the on again, off again affair is now a marriage. Now what does Favre bring? Is the bicep injury 100% healed or is Brett just looking for one last dig at Ted Thompson and his former management team in Green Bay. Most on the inside believe that this has been in the works and that Brett just wanted to miss training camp and the "dorm thing."
We know the money is good at $10 to $12 million and word is he would start a preseason game against Kansas City just a few days after inking the deal.
So what does he have left and does it fit the Vikings? The 39-year-old may be tested to surpass his 2008 statistics with the Jets where he threw for 3,472 yards with 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. While most Vikings followers would look at last year as a down year for the QB position, Gus Frerotte and Tavaris Jackson combined for 3,213 yards with 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions for the Vikings.
Fantasy Upside
Favre has a potentially great team to work with. With Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor keeping a ground game going, Favre shouldn't have to be brilliant or overly creative to be successful. The Vikings defense looks to be among the leagues stingiest and provide Favre better field position than he had last season in New York. Favre will also have WR Percy Harvin playing a variety of positions and lining up in the Wildcat to keep defenses guessing. Favre has also had very productive relationships with tight ends, which should increase Vishante Shiancoe's fantasy value this year. If Favre does carry a healthy arm and his torn bicep is indeed healthy, Bernard Berrian could also see some big plays.
Fantasy Downside
Favre will have to answer to nobody as it is clear the owner Zygi Wilf opted to make this move despite several in his organization having an issue with how it went down and for the amount of money being $10-$12 million.
Word is that the Vikings will likely waive Tavaris Jackson. For now, team chemistry should survive. But last year, many Jets players did not like how Favre disassociated himself from the team. Might that resurface in 2009, if Favre or the Vikings struggle out of the gate? How healthy is the bicep injury from last year? The loss of veteran All Pro Matt Birk at offensive center may also make the Vikings line a little less solid for this aged veteran QB.
Bottom Line
Favre will be the focus of the media and the hopes of a very talented team will be resting on his shoulders. With Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and a great defense providing better field position, I believe Favre, if healthy, is likely to have similar numbers to last year with 3,472 yards with 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. If so, he should be somewhere between the 10th and 17th ranked quarterback. If you want to have Favre on your fantasy squad, I would strongly suggest having another strong option as an alternative.
