Davone Bess 2009 Season Outlook

Davone Bess

Upside: Bess went from undrafted free agent to one of fantasy football’s waiver wire wonders in 2008. Bess brought the exceptional route running he learned from playing in June Jones’ Run n’ Shoot offense at Hawaii and used that to become a productive slot receiver for the Dolphins. Bess hauled in 54 passes for 554 yards and was targeted 75 times during his rookie campaign. Logic says those numbers will likely increase this season.

Downside: Out of his 54 receptions, only one went for a touchdown, so Bess isn’t going to do much for you in the scoring area. Bess is primarily a slot, possession receiver, so his main contribution to your fantasy team is going to be in the reception department. If some of Miami’s younger receivers start to eat into his receptions, Bess’ fantasy value will drop significantly.

Bottom Line: Bess is probably a better NFL receiver than a fantasy one. He is a hard worker that has exceeded expectations but the Dolphins are looking to upgrade their receiver position. Miami drafted Pat White and he is basically a more talented version of Bess. The former Hawaii standout will probably equal his 2008 production but it’s unlikely he will put up numbers beyond that, making his average draft position of 165 just a little low in my opinion.
