Fantasy Football PPR Value: Colts RB Joseph Addai

It seems like the entire fantasy world has caught Donald Brown mania. While it’s no doubt the 2nd year player does have a lot of skill, the fact still remains that Joseph Addai is the starter and more importantly, the trusted back in the Colts offense. Addai is not old as some may think. He’s only 27, so it’s irresponsible to think that Addai will be replaced by the youthful Brown. If you take out Addai’s injury plagued 2008 season, he’s averaged 44 catches, over 1,300 total yards and 12 TDs per year. You may want to read that again; 44 catches, over 1,300 total yards and 12 TDs. Addai may be one of the most unheralded players in all of fantasy football, but do not overlook him. When you draft Addai prepare for some snickers and ignorant comments by the fantasy novices in your league. Pay them no mind as you will be laughing last come fantasy playoff time. If you’re still not convinced, lay up and take Brown as well. It’s a very safe strategy and doing so will guarantee that you get all of the RB production out of the high-powered Colts offense in 2010.

2010 Contract Year RB: Joseph Addai, Indianapolis Colts

It’s pretty much common knowledge that Joseph Addai isn’t an elite running back. He’s certainly a decent player, but playing with Peyton Manning tends to make solid guys look like superstars at times. Clearly the Colts have doubts about Addai being part of their long-term future, or else they wouldn’t have selected Donald Brown in the first round of the 2009 draft. Addai held off the rookie last season to remain Indy’s main back, and scored 13 touchdowns. However, Brown is more versed in the offense heading into year two, and he’s potentially the better bet of the two to be the Colts starter in 2011. Expect Addai to play well in 2010, as he knows he’s probably playing for a nice deal from another team.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook: Colts RB Joseph Addai

Fantasy Upside
Addai is an outstanding receiver out of the backfield and has scored 35 touchdowns in the past three years. He's also coming off a season in which he had more than 1,100 total yards and 13 touchdowns.

Downside
Injuries continue to be the bugaboo with Addai. Even though he played in 15 games last season, he seems to be constantly nicked up, causing the Colts to limit his carries. He had just three games in 2009 with 20 or more carries and, at least in part, because of that, failed to record a single 100-yard rushing game. There's also second-year pro Donald Brown, a 2009 first-round draft pick, breathing down his neck.

Bottom Line
Addai's ADP is currently at 50, which places him in the fourth or fifth round in most drafts and makes him a low-end No. 2 running back. That's about right for a player who just doesn't seem to have a truly defined role despite being a starting running back in a high-scoring offense. Peyton Manning calls his own plays and sometimes forgets the running game is there. Thanks to the touchdowns he scores, Addai is solid in scoring leagues. And thanks to his receiving skills, he still holds value in PPR leagues. But in yardage leagues, his value isn't what it could be. Still, Addai can provide consistent production at a pretty good draft day price.
