NFL Coaching Turnover
It was a busy off-season as many NFL teams have new Head Coaches. In addition, we have new faces at the all-important Offensive Coordinator position.
All these changes are vitally important to fantasy football owners.
To help get you back up to speed, a quick review by team.
Arizona Cardinals
Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt - starts his third year as AZ's Head Coach. Offensive Coordinator - highly experienced Russ Grimm. Team coaching staff has significant ties to the Bill Cowher Steelers teams.
Atlanta Falcons
Head Coach Mike Smith - entering his 2nd season. Exceeded expectations in his rookie season however the team's OC run the offense. Offensive Coordinator - Mike Mularkey - is highly experienced and has also been a head coach in the NFL. In addition, Mularkey was successful as an OC with the Steelers.
Baltimore Ravens
Head Coach John Harbaugh - entering his 2nd season as the Head Coach in Baltimore, Harbaugh learned under Eagles HC Andy Reid. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron - a proven NFL OC, Cameron is largely in control of the team's offensive play calling.
Buffalo Bills
Head Coach Dick Jauron - veteran Head Coach with Bills. Rather conservative mindset. Offensive Coordinator Turk Schonert - in his 2nd season in this role with the Bills. He continues to talk about a more aggressive attack.
Carolina Panthers
Head Coach John Fox - entering his 8th season the Panthers Head Coach. Was under fire due to playoff losses. Offensive Coordinator Jeff Davidson - in his 3rd season, on the hot seat due to his recent play calling.
Chicago Bears
Head Coach Lovie Smith - proven veteran in his 6th year with the Bears. Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner - 5th season in the OC spot.
Cincinnati Bengals
Head Coach Marvin Lewis - in his 7th season with the Bengals. On the Hot Seat. Offensive Coordinator Bob Bratkowski - was considered one of the better OC's in the league.
Cleveland Browns
Head Coach Eric Mangini - in his first year as the Browns head coach. Trying to establish NE's system here after leaving the Jets. Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll - largely unproven, first year in this role, will have his work cut out for him.
Dallas Cowboys
Head Coach Wade Phillips - in his 3rd season as the Cowboys head coach. Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett - also in his 3rd season. Considered one of the better OC's in the league.
Denver Broncos
Head Coach Josh McDaniels - former Patriots OC, first year head coach, the Broncos must be patient with him as he tries to implement New England's "system." Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy - Denver goes with another rookie here. Could be a very risky move.
Detroit Lions
Head Coach Jim Schwartz - rookie NFL Head Coach with a focus on defense. Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan - should be given plenty of control, as Schwartz won't have a heavy hand in the offense.
Green Bay Packers
Head Coach Mike McCarthy - in his 4th year as the Head Coach, not the type that makes many changes. Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin - 3rd season in this role.
Houston Texans
Head Coach Gary Kubiak - former Denver OC, now in his 4th season as the Texans head man. He has a heavy hand in the offense. Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan - in his 2nd season, the scheme is on the rise.
Indianapolis Colts
Head Coach Jim Caldwell - rookie NFL Head Coach. Could be a reach. Had a losing record of 26-63 as a college head coach. The saving grace could be he has Peyton Manning and OC Tom Moore. However, as of 5/15/2008, it appears Tom Moore is indeed going to retire. Offensive Coordinator - ? - as of 5/15/2009 word is Tom Moore, a veteran with 32 years of NFL experience, and in his 12th season as offensive coordinator of the Colts has retired. Moore would have run the show on offense, especially with a rookie head coach. With Moore out of the picture, it could be a major blow to Indy. Clyde Christensen is the most likely of the Colts current staff to replace Moore at OC.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Head Coach Jack Del Rio - in his 7th season as head man. Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter - 3rd season as OC.
Kansas City Chiefs
Head Coach Todd Haley - yet another rookie NFL coach. However, Haley has 15-years experience in the NFL including his recent stint as the Arizona Cardinals OC. Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey - veteran enters his 2nd season as KC’s offensive coordinator. Team will also leverage Assistant HC Maurice Carthon in this role.
Miami Dolphins
Head Coach Tony Sparano - returns for his 2nd season as the Dolphins HC. Preaches the need for a strong running game. Offensive Coordinator Dan Henning - also in his 2nd season.
Minnesota Vikings
Head Coach Brad Childress - now in his 4th season as the Vikings Head Coach. West Coast system with a focus on the running game. Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell - also in his 4th season.
New England Patriots
Head Coach Bill Belichick - in his 10th season as the Pats Head Coach. Much of the league has been trying to copy him for years now. Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien - rookie OC, was New England's wide receivers coach last season. Belichick will have a heavy hand in the offense.
New Orleans Saints
Head Coach Sean Payton - aggressive and creative offensive minded Head Coach in his 4th season as the Saints HC. Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael - in his first year as Saints OC, HC Payton will have a heavy hand in the offense.
New York Giants
Head Coach Tom Coughlin - veteran HC in his 6th season with the Giants Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride - 3rd season as Giants OC.
New York Jets
Head Coach Rex Ryan - rookie head coach for Jets. Ryan was the Ravens Defensive Coordinator four seasons. Good fit for NY media. Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer - retained by Rex Ryan, he's in his 4th season as the Jets OC.
Oakland Raiders
Head Coach Tom Cable - was interim coach last year, back for his 2nd season as the Raiders HC. Excels more so in the rushing game attack. Offensive Coordinator Ted Tollner - an old-school coach with years of experience. First season with the Raiders. His area of preparation is the passing attack. QB Coach Paul Hackett will also help direct the offense.
Philadelphia Eagles
Head Coach Andy Reid - in his 10th season as Eagles Head Coach. Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg - like Reid, Mornhinweg is another long-time disciple of the West Coast offensive system.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Head Coach Mike Tomlin - in his 3rd season as the Steelers HC, the Super Bowl winning coach is in his prime. Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians - also in his 3rd year, a valuable part of the Steelers team.
San Diego Chargers
Head Coach Norv Turner - a journeyman Head Coach now in his 3rd season with the Chargers. Overall, Turner is 77-95 (.448) as an NFL Head Coach. Offensive Coordinator Clarence Shelmon - also in his 3rd season with SD.
San Francisco 49ers
Head Coach Mike Singletary - named interim head coach last year, returns to Head Coach role this year. Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye - 1st year with 49ers as OC. Comes from the Jets (Running Back Coach). Has 12 seasons of NFL OC experience with six different teams, but never had much success.
Seattle Seahawks
Head Coach Jim Mora - former Falcons HC, Mora is in his 1st year as Seahawks head man. Offensive Coordinator Gregg Knapp - in his 1st season as Seahawks OC. Knapp runs a West coast offensive scheme and was OC for the Falcons under Mora.
St. Louis Rams
Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo - rookie Head Coach, Spagnuolo was the Giants DC for several years. Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur - trained in the West Coast system under Eagles HC Andy Reid. This is his first year as the Rams OC.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Head Coach Raheem Morris - rookie head coach. On paper, this looks like a major reach. With no head coaching experience to speak of, Morris has held various positions working mainly as a defensive assistant. Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski - in his first year as OC for the Bus. Jagodzinski favors offensive zone blocking schemes and elements of the West Coast system.
Tennessee Titans
Head Coach Jeff Fisher - most tenured NFL Head Coach, Fisher is in his 16the season with the Titans. Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger - favors running game and opportunistic deep throws.
Washington Redskins
Head Coach Jim Zorn - in his 2nd season as the Redskins HC. Zorn will continue to have a heavy hand in the play calling. Offensive Coordinator Sherman Smith - a West Coast style game planner, Smith is also in his 2nd year in his role with Washington.
